Around 6 inches (15 centimetres) total length, any idea what this is?

Some kind of early rocket perhaps?..

If that can fly, I don't think it would go in a straight line, even after it cleared the atmosphere, even assuming that it did manage to get that far!
I don't think the scrollwork at the bottom has any purpose other than decoration. The shape makes me think of a musical instrument; perhaps something related to a saxophone or a horn?

Just wondering if it could be some sort of 'grinder' ~ not too sure for what, probably something hard, like pepper corns or the like

An interesting thought, Peter, but I don't think the thin part can move in respect to the bell.

Now that's a very good point Geoff and one that completely passed me by ~ OK ~ plan B ~ at that length and if the top part is to blow into ~ how about a 'hunting horn' ~ but then the only ones I have seen are straight....DOH

I was thinking similarly, but it could also be the reverse - an ear trumpet.

I was just wondering if it could be a warning horn ~ only 6" long, easily held in the hand, and blown by the lookout when a train is coming to warn the men working on the lines ~ hell, my imagination will certainly get the better of me one day [if it hasn't already...lol]
